The SLPP government is now a quarter of its sixty-month second term, which spans five years, and the 2028 presidential and general elections are fast approaching.

My party, the All People’s Congress (APC), should address its internal divisions, restore its reputation, and regain the confidence and support of the voters. Failure to address these challenges with sincerity and genuine commitment could lead to another missed opportunity in the presidential race.

A few months ago, I penned an article urging the party to shake off the dust and move forward – not in the sense of “whosoever will, may come,” but by actively reaching out to both backsliders and new converts. Before long, the 2028 election cycle will begin with the lower-level elections and the election of the next flag-bearer.

I have closely monitored outreach efforts nationwide, noting diverse perspectives from stakeholders and members. Despite their challenges and shortcomings, these engagements have been valuable. I feel confident that my party is finally regaining its footing.

But carrying the burden of the folly of our current MPs is an albatross that would weigh down efforts to rebuild public trust.I witnessed firsthand how the party works diligently to regain its footing at the APC Diaspora 6th Region Retreat held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel in Banjul, The Gambia, from December 19 to 22, 2024, with the theme: Uniting for Progress.

It started with a ‘meet and greet’ evening that brought together comrades from diverse backgrounds and with varying internal leanings. There were diaspora representatives from across the world. Some former ministers were also in attendance.

A representation of the current executive led by the national chairman and party secretary, former and present MPs, and regional and district executive members, alongside a host of ordinary members and critical stakeholders, also graced the occasion.

Notwithstanding the mix, participants embraced a vision of progress and collective aspirations. Chairman of the APC Diaspora 6th Region, Comrade Alfred Kebe Sesay, described the auspicious occasion as a moment to exchange ideas, strengthen connections, and renew dedication that will unite the party. He emphasized the need for a collective effort to rebuild the party as a transformative force for Sierra Leone’s prosperity.Several speakers ignited enthusiasm that filled the atmosphere with collective energy.

They shared their unique experiences, ideas, and passions, creating a conspicuous sense of hope and determination. This hope and determination were further codified in a single aspiration by our esteemed National Chairman, Comrade Minkailu Mansaray, during his inspiring keynote address. He spoke of the party’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its ranks, healing divisions and charting a path to victory in the next presidential and general elections.

He acknowledged the threats to unity, strength, and resolve posed by internal squabbling, character assassination, and disingenuous interpretations of events within the party. Chairman Minkailu Mansaray called on members to “eschew the divisive and adopt a collective mindset.” He said this is a rallying cry that transcends our differences.

He described the party as a tapestry of cultures, experiences, and ideas, adding that the party’s diversity should not be a source of division but rather a source of strength. Chairman Minkailu Mansaray recognized the increasing involvement and enthusiasm of the young adults in the party’s efforts to regain control of governance.“Moving forward, I want to assure you all that we will create a level playing field for every member of our party who may wish to express his or her political right…” the chairman asserted.

The retreat showcased a vibrant collaboration and the enthusiastic involvement of the party’s young leaders aspiring to be the next flag bearer. Each aspirant brought flair and showcased their unique offerings, contributing to a kaleidoscope of experiences and preparedness for the 2028 elections that delighted all participants.

Papers alongside engaging panel discussions that included interactive elements, encouraging participation, and collaboration formed the high points of the event.Conversations flowed freely, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of active listening and engagement. Laughter and smiles were abundant as barriers crumbled, forging genuine connections.

The spirit of collaboration was palpable, with individuals working side-by-side, brainstorming, and problem-solving together. Gourmet food and drinks, live entertainment, and immersive experiences added to the lively ambience, leaving lasting impressions.I had a productive conversation with Chairman Minkailu Mansaray, echoing the spirit of the Diaspora retreat.

We engaged in a spirited exchange of views, recognizing that our shared commitment to the party’s success transcends any differences we may have. It should remind us that our collective strength lies in our unity, even amidst our diverse perspectives. Chairman Mansaray outlined his ambitious plans to revitalize the party, emphasizing unity, capacity building, and a fair playing field for all aspiring candidates.

He envisions a party strengthened and prepared for governance, with a clear pathway to promote national reconciliation, enhance national cohesion, and uphold accountability, the rule of law, and good governance. His top priority is to rebrand the party, a crucial step in restoring public trust and confidence. However, the recent controversies surrounding the conduct of MPs have further impugned the party’s reputation, posing a significant challenge to his vision.

I hope he understands the importance of directly addressing this issue, which is crucial for restoring public trust and confidence. He should also tackle the Alfred Peter Conteh and Gbondo Peni-Peni court cases outside the courtroom.

Additionally, the Sam-Sumana issue requires prompt clarification. Furthermore, in the spirit of collective responsibility, I believe that the current executive should refrain from blaming Dr Samura Kamara for the misfortunes of the June 24, 2023, presidential election.I also believe it is essential for Dr Samura Kamara to communicate to our supporters that the 2023 presidential election has concluded, and there is no possibility of unseating President Julius Maada Bio and replacing him with himself as president.

I support Chairman Minkailu Mansaray’s vision for the party, as encapsulated in the communiqué signed at the retreat. The delegates united in their commitment to the party’s success, emphasized the need for reconciliation among party members. They urged everyone to prioritize the party’s collective interests over personal ambitions, recognizing that a united front is essential to victory. They also underscored the importance of transparent and democratic processes within the party, advocating for inclusivity, meritocracy, and fairness in leadership elections.

The delegates urged the party leadership to implement the recommendations of the tripartite committee, believing that these recommendations hold the key to addressing past electoral malpractices and fostering a more cohesive and effective national electoral system. In my opinion, the retreat primarily emphasized unity and cooperation. Differences were celebrated, and the common goal transcended individual interests.

There was a deep respect and trust, as everyone was committed to the same cause. I could not resist the feeling of being part of something bigger, something meaningful, and invigorating and inspiring. This retreat should be a shared sense of accomplishment and pride. It is the beginning of a journey toward a common goal that should be marked by a sense of solidarity, empowerment, and collective purpose.

The discussions and deliberations are a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together for the greater good.I am still in awe of the air filled with purpose and optimism. I still feel the warmth of Comrades of diverse backgrounds, their sharing smiles, and warm greetings.

I am beginning to see a party with positive energy notwithstanding the challenges because our collective resolve is our greatest strength. Chairman Minkailu Mansaray wants us to move forward with unwavering determination, ready to overcome any obstacles that stand in our way. We should mould ourselves as a party driven by a shared vision of success that rallies with a spirit of camaraderie and resilience.

Let each step re-energize our confidence and draw inspiration from our past achievements and lessons learned to fuel our momentum toward a triumphant victory in 2028. In conclusion, the APC Diaspora retreat held in The Gambia is a vibrant testament to the party’s rich tapestry of diversity. This gathering celebrated differences and reinforced shared commitments and collective efforts to move the party forward. We should embrace the path ahead with renewed purpose and unwavering unity. We must embark on this journey toward the 2028 elections filled with determination.

Notwithstanding the challenges, we must stay focused, adaptable, and ever-optimistic. We must put the party interest above personal interest, understanding that our true strength lies in the solidarity we build together. United for progress, we can make the party more attractive, trusted, and capable of forming the next government.Merry Christmas to all Comrades and best wishes in the New Year.
