Popular Opposition politician and former Presidential flagbearer Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray has publicly criticized the government for the delayed payment of December salaries, which has left many government workers frustrated during the festive season.
In a strongly worded social media post, Mansaray expressed his dismay, addressing President Julius Maada Bio directly. He stated that numerous workers had reached out to him, lamenting the absence of their salaries during Christmas. “Why are you doing this to the people who needed their salary to put smiles on their families’ faces for the Christmas holidays? This is wrong and wickedness to the highest degree,” he wrote, describing the delay as a grave injustice.
The delay has caused widespread discontent among government employees, especially teachers, who have been vocal about their struggles to manage the season’s financial demands. A teacher, speaking anonymously, expressed her disappointment. “I wanted to prepare something special for my children, but I couldn’t because of this delay,” she said. “If my salary comes through today, I will rush to the market to buy what we need.”
Across the country, long queues have been observed at banks as anxious workers wait for salary notifications. Many have shared their frustration over the uncertainty, which they say has overshadowed their holiday celebrations.
Addressing the issue, Myk Berewa, State House Communications Director, acknowledged the delay in a public statement. He attributed the problem to technical challenges with the e-transfer system but assured workers that efforts were underway to resolve the issue. “Salaries have been processed, and our GoSL Payroll team and banking institutions are working extended hours to ensure everyone receives their alerts,” he said.
