Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr convened a pivotal meeting with local media partners to outline the Freetown City Council’s (FCC) “Transform Freetown – Transforming Lives 2024-2028 Development Roadmap.”
Supported by C40 Cities, the meeting served as a platform to share updates on key initiatives aimed at driving sustainable development and improving lives in Sierra Leone’s capital.
During the engagement, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr highlighted FCC’s ongoing sanitation and waste management efforts, innovative interventions to address the climate crisis, and the strides being made on the transformative Freetown Cable Car Project.
She also spoke about her global role as Co-Chair of C40 Cities, a network of leading cities dedicated to combating climate change.“The media is more than just a conveyor of information. It remains a powerful catalyst for change,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr emphasized.
She called on media practitioners to leverage their influence responsibly, particularly in tackling critical issues like the climate crisis, both locally and globally.
The Mayor underscored the media’s vital role in amplifying credible climate reporting, shaping public discourse, and inspiring action to address pressing challenges.
She encouraged the media to actively engage with FCC’s roadmap and contribute to driving meaningful solutions through impactful storytelling and awareness campaigns.
The Transform Freetown – Transforming Lives initiative reflects FCC’s commitment to sustainable urban development, with a focus on environmental resilience, improved infrastructure, and enhanced quality of life for residents.
By fostering collaboration with media partners, FCC aims to mobilize public support and ensure widespread community participation in achieving the roadmap’s ambitious goals.
As Freetown continues to grapple with the dual challenges of rapid urbanization and climate vulnerability, the Mayor’s call for a united front between the city council and the media underscores the importance of shared responsibility in building a more sustainable and inclusive city for all.
