The Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone has raised concerns over the influence of political intervention in the country’s justice system following the release of Hawa Hunt from detention. While welcoming her discharge, the organization expressed dismay over what it perceives as a disregard for the rule of law in favor of political influence.

In a statement issued after Hunt’s release, the Lawyers’ Society noted that her prolonged detention should not have occurred in the first place had the rule of law been properly applied. The group emphasized that civil remedies would have been sufficient if her remarks were deemed defamatory, rather than resorting to criminal proceedings and months of detention.

“Sadly, we have observed that the WORD of politicians seems to carry more weight than the RULE OF LAW,” the statement read, highlighting growing concerns over political interference in legal matters.

The case of Hawa Hunt has drawn widespread public attention, with legal professionals and human rights advocates calling for greater adherence to due process and legal safeguards. The Lawyers’ Society urged authorities to ensure that justice remains independent and that no individual is subjected to undue detention based on political considerations.

Hawa Hunt’s release marks the end of her ordeal, but the legal fraternity continues to push for a justice system where constitutional rights and the rule of law prevail over political influence.
