Sierra Leone’s education system is under scrutiny as the State of Education Report for Sierra Leone 2023, released by the Institute of Governance Reform (IGR), paints a stark picture of the challenges plaguing the nation’s educational landscape.

In a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Education, the IGR presented its comprehensive findings, shedding light on the multifaceted issues affecting education in Sierra Leone. The report, the culmination of extensive research and feedback from citizens and schools across the country, serves as a critical call to action for policymakers and stakeholders.

Andrew Lavali, Executive Director of IGR, emphasized the report’s significance in identifying systemic deficiencies and proposing actionable solutions to address them. Lavali’s presentation underscored the urgency of the situation, highlighting key areas where Sierra Leone’s education system falls short and the detrimental impact on students’ learning outcomes.

Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, acknowledged the gravity of the findings and pledged to prioritize reforms to address the shortcomings outlined in the report. By endorsing the report and committing to its recommendations, Minister Sackey signaled a strong commitment to improving the quality of education in Sierra Leone.

The European Union’s continued support for education in Sierra Leone was reaffirmed by Manuel Alexander Muller, the EU Ambassador to the country. Ambassador Muller stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in implementing reforms and enhancing educational outcomes for all Sierra Leonean children.

The urgency of the education crisis was underscored by a sobering statistic from a 2022 UNICEF report, revealing that only eight percent of third-grade children in Sierra Leone possess basic reading skills. This alarming figure underscores the dire need for immediate intervention to ensure that every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to thrive.

As Sierra Leone grapples with the findings of the State of Education Report 2023, stakeholders must come together to enact meaningful reforms that prioritize the well-being and future prospects of the nation’s youth. The report serves as a catalyst for change, urging policymakers to take decisive action to address the systemic issues hindering educational progress in Sierra Leone.
