Sierra Leone has been facing chronic electricity shortages for decades, a significant hurdle in its plans for further industrialisation. Despite immense efforts and trillions of leones pumped into the sector, there has been little to no marked improvement.
The country’s woeful lack of generating capacity and dilapidated grid infrastructure have resulted in a significant portion of the energy produced going to waste as it cannot be efficiently distributed to consumers.
The issue is not just limited to the lack of electricity supply. The problem is structural, and the continued lack of electricity supply to homes and businesses has become the order of the day.
The weak grid infrastructure and corruption in the power sector have made it challenging to guarantee a stable and adequate electricity supply.
This has made it difficult for big businesses to establish themselves in the country, which has further worsened the economic situation in the country.
Sierra Leone is set to celebrate its 63rd independence day in a few days, but the country faces significant political, economic, and social challenges. The lack of electricity supply has made it challenging for businesses to make a profit and employ people, leading to increased poverty in the country.
The government needs to take urgent and concrete steps to improve the power sector’s situation, which is essential for the country’s overall development and growth, and it requires a sustainable solution that goes beyond the political rhetoric and short-term fixes.#AMF06
