Former Head of Makeni Diocese, Bishop Georgio Biguzzi Announced Dead

The former head of the Makeni Diocese, Bishop Georgio Biguzzi, has passed away. Aged 88.

Bishop worked extensively in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, where he lived and served the Catholic Church for decades.

Bishop Biguzzi was more than just a servant of the Catholic Church. He was deeply involved in ending the war in Sierra Leone and was even part of the delegation that negotiated with the rebels in Togo leading to a peace accord.

He also helped establish the first university in northern Sierra Leone – the University of Makeni (UNIMAK).

In a press release dated 1st July 2024, the University of Makeni wrote that the “tireless efforts” of Bishop Giorgio Biguzzi (late) were instrumental in the establishment and growth of the university.

“Bishop Giorgio Biguzzi was a visionary leader whose dedication and tireless efforts were instrumental in the establishment and growth of UNIMAK,” Shebora Samba Kamara wrote.

“His visionary leadership and commitment to education have shaped the foundation of upon which our institution stands,” he continued.

Bishop Giorgio Biguzzi passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024, in Parma, Italy. His death was announced by the Vicar General of the Makeni Diocese, Reverend Father Dominic Arnold Johnson. Until his death, Bishop Biguzzi was the Bishop Emeritus of Makeni Diocese.
