The Freetown City Council (FCC), in partnership with several organizations and funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund, is implementing the Women for Water and Peace Project (W4WP) in Freetown

The project involves constructing 25 solar-powered boreholes in communities identified as hotspots for water-related conflicts and gender-based violence. These boreholes, equipped with water kiosks, filters, and solar lights, are managed by women trained for the purpose, enhancing their security and entrepreneurship skills.

During a recent visit to a borehole site in Mayenkineh, the German Ambassador, His Excellency Jens Kraus-Massé, observed the project’s impact. The project has created 200 jobs for women, provided entrepreneurship training, and increased awareness of human and legal rights.

The boreholes will supply clean water to about 75,000 residents, addressing a critical community need identified during the Transform Freetown-Transforming Lives Development Agenda. The initiative aims to empower women, improve access to water, and promote peace in Freetown.
