EDSA Announces Mandatory Prepaid Meter Upgrade

By: Abdul Razack Gbla

The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has initiated a mandatory upgrade for all consumers utilising prepaid meters, starting from August 1, 2024. The initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and security of the electricity distribution system across the country.

According to EDSA, all consumers are required to purchase electricity tokens to facilitate the upgrade. Upon purchasing these tokens, customers will receive a unique 60-digit code. This code will be segmented with separators every 20 digits, and customers must input it into their prepaid meters in 20-digit increments.

To ensure the process is correctly followed, customers are advised to wait 15 seconds between entering each 20-digit segment. A successful input will be indicated by a display showing either ’02’ or the word ‘success’ on the meter. This upgrade is a one-time process, as the 60-digit code will be issued only once per customer.

However, EDSA has noted that certain types of meters will not be compatible with this upgrade. The authority has urged affected consumers to contact their customer service centers for further guidance and solutions. This upgrade is part of a broader effort to improve the reliability and transparency of the electricity distribution system in Sierra Leone.
