Dr. Richard Konteh has sharply criticized Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh for his recent comments on Africa Young Voices (AYV), describing them as “irresponsible” and “reckless.” The Chief Minister had dismissed opposition leaders as “unprogressive” for their critiques of the government’s policies, a remark that Dr. Konteh warns could endanger national unity and peace in Sierra Leone.

In his response, Dr. Konteh underscored the damaging nature of Sengeh’s rhetoric, which he believes exacerbates divisions within the country. “Such statements are not just reckless but undermine the fundamental principles of democracy,” Dr. Konteh said. He emphasized that constructive criticism is essential in a healthy democracy and that disparaging dissenting voices stifles the dialogue necessary to tackle the nation’s challenges.

“Democratic governance thrives on healthy political discourse, where all voices, including those critical of the government, are respected. Labeling opposition leaders as unprogressive silences the very discussions needed to propel Sierra Leone forward,” Dr. Konteh asserted.

Representing the All People’s Congress (APC), Dr. Konteh highlighted the significant contributions of the APC during its time in governance, including advancements in infrastructure, education, and economic growth. He expressed regret over the erosion of these gains under the current administration. “The progress achieved during the APC’s tenure has unfortunately been rolled back in the past seven years, to the detriment of our people,” he lamented.

Dr. Konteh also addressed Sengeh’s history of making disparaging remarks, accusing the Chief Minister of targeting not only opposition members but also religious leaders. He called for a more respectful tone in political discourse, urging Sengeh to refrain from extending such disrespect towards the APC and its leadership.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Konteh stressed the importance of national unity and inclusive governance. He called on all political leaders to engage in respectful dialogue and focus on the collective goal of improving the lives of Sierra Leoneans. “We must move away from divisive language and work together towards a united Sierra Leone, where every voice is valued in the pursuit of progress,” Dr. Konteh implored.
