Crescent Sighted: Ramadan 1446 Begins on Saturday, March 1 2025

The crescent for the Islamic month of Ramadan 1446 was sighted today, marking the beginning of the holy month of fasting for Muslims worldwide.

Consequently, the first day of Ramadan will be observed on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

The announcement was made after confirmed sightings of the new moon, signaling the start of Ramadan, a sacred month during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, engage in increased acts of worship, and seek spiritual purification.

Ramadan holds profound significance in Islam, commemorating the month in which the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It is a time of heightened devotion, prayer, reflection, and acts of charity.

Muslim communities across Sierra Leone and around the world are preparing for a month of spiritual rejuvenation, with mosques expected to host special nightly Taraweeh prayers and gatherings for Iftar (the meal to break the fast).

Religious scholars have also emphasized the importance of utilizing the month to strengthen one’s faith, seek forgiveness, and increase good deeds.
