In a powerful statement, Comrade Mariama Lowe Bangura, the National Women’s Leader of the All Peoples Congress (APC) Party, has called for extensive gender-sensitive reforms within the APC and across Sierra Leone.
She emphasized the importance of enhancing women’s representation in decision-making roles at all levels of governance to foster a political environment that is accountable to women.
Comrade Bangura stressed that the initiative should extend beyond merely increasing the number of women in leadership positions. She advocated for comprehensive reforms aimed at ensuring that all elected officials are not only equipped to promote gender equality but are also committed to implementing policies effectively. These policies should undergo rigorous monitoring to create lasting change, she asserted.
“It is crucial that these reforms are implemented effectively and subjected to thorough oversight to achieve enduring progress,” she stated. “Through collective determination and resilience, we can forge a brighter, more equitable future for all citizens of Sierra Leone.”
She urged a unified approach to addressing the challenges ahead with optimism and a spirit of empowerment. Acknowledging the struggles women face both domestically and in the diaspora, Comrade Bangura highlighted the resilience of women in confronting societal challenges.
“Many have faced health issues, family difficulties, the loss of loved ones, and business setbacks,” she noted, adding that women often bear the brunt of economic hardships. Despite these challenges, she commended the strength and perseverance women have shown in navigating difficulties.
Expressing her gratitude, she concluded, “I appreciate your sacrifices and unwavering support for our party during these trying times.”
Comrade Bangura’s call to action underscores the need for a collective effort to achieve gender equality, marking a significant step towards more inclusive governance in Sierra Leone.
