More than 600 registered members of the Old Prince Waleans Association (OPWA) are expected to cast their ballots today as the association conducts what is being described as one of the largest and most keenly contested alumni elections ever witnessed by a secondary school association in Sierra Leone.
The election has generated significant interest among Princewaleans both in Sierra Leone and across the diaspora, with an unprecedented level of participation reflecting growing enthusiasm for the association’s leadership and future direction.
Sources close to the electoral process disclosed that several candidates have withdrawn from the race ahead of polling day, leading to a number of unopposed positions. Among the most notable developments is the Vice President I race, where Alhaji Dauda Musa Bangura is set to be elected unopposed following the withdrawal of other contenders.
The presidential contest, however, remains one of the major highlights of the election, with Samuel E.F. John (popularly known as SEF John) emerging as one of the leading candidates.
In a message issued ahead of the polls, SEF John called on members to conduct themselves peacefully and uphold the democratic values of the association. He stressed that the election should not be viewed as a battle between rivals but as an opportunity to strengthen OPWA and promote unity among Princewaleans.
He urged supporters to reject division, misinformation, and personal attacks, while encouraging election officials to carry out their duties with integrity, professionalism, impartiality, and transparency to ensure a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
SEF John also reaffirmed his commitment to a leadership anchored on accountability, transparency, inclusiveness, and service, promising to build an association where every member feels represented and valued.
Meanwhile, Vice President I aspirant Alhaji Dauda Musa Bangura appealed to Princewaleans to maintain the school’s cherished values throughout the electoral process. Reflecting on his four years of service as Vice President II, he said he was seeking the higher office to continue the transformation of the association while preserving the legacy of the Prince of Wales School.
He called on members at home and abroad to support his vision for unity, continuity, and development, while urging all supporters to ensure the election is conducted peacefully and respectfully.
Today’s election is expected to usher in a new executive that will steer the affairs of the Old Prince Waleans Association, with members hoping the process will further strengthen one of Sierra Leone’s most influential alumni associations.
