One of Sierra Leone’s finest legal practitioners and presidential hopeful of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), Ady Macauley—who is also a former Secretary-General of the Bar Association, former prosecutor, and former Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission—highlighted the role of lawyers in democracy at the 1st Annual General Meeting of the Lawyers’ Society.

The event, themed “The Role of Lawyers in a Democratic Society,” brought together legal professionals and governance experts to discuss the responsibilities of lawyers in safeguarding democratic principles.

Keynote speakers included Faith M.A. Odhiambo, President of the Kenya Law Society; Marcella Samba Sesay, a renowned good governance practitioner; and Hassan Nassrallah, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).

Reflecting on the discussions, Macauley highlighted the speakers’ emphasis on the vital function of lawyers as the “guardians of democracy and the rule of law.”
