SLAJ Calls for Justice Following the Brutal Murder of Journalist Samuel Brima Mattia in Waterloo

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has expressed profound sorrow and distress over the tragic death of Samuel Brima Mattia, a former reporter for VOPAD Radio 96.5 FM and an active member of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL). Samuel was brutally killed under unclear circumstances on Thursday, January 16, 2025, in Waterloo.

In a press release, SLAJ unequivocally condemned the act of violence, emphasizing the importance of protecting press freedom and the safety of journalists who serve the public by providing vital information. “The killing of Samuel Brima Mattia is a grave attack on journalism and the principles of free speech,” the statement read.

SLAJ has called on the Sierra Leone Police to conduct a comprehensive and swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding Samuel’s death. The association stressed the need for justice and the accountability of those responsible, asserting that such a heinous crime must not go unpunished.

As the investigation continues, SLAJ is actively coordinating with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Waterloo Division. The association remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the safety and protection of journalists across Sierra Leone.

In mourning the loss of their colleague, SLAJ extended its deepest condolences to Samuel’s family, SWASAL, and all those affected by this tragedy. The association vowed to support the grieving family and the journalistic community during this difficult time.
