In a recent statement that has sparked widespread controversy, Chief Minister David Sengeh referred to the All People’s Congress (APC) as an “unprogressive” party.

This remark has drawn criticism from various quarters, including prominent political figures like Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK), who has vehemently defended the APC’s record, highlighting its significant contributions to Sierra Leone’s development.

JFK pointed out that the APC’s achievements in education are unparalleled. During its tenure, the APC established key institutions such as the Law and Medical Schools, the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKust), the University of Makeni (UNIMAK), and the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. Additionally, the foundation for the Eastern University in Kono was laid under the APC’s governance. These initiatives have played a crucial role in expanding educational opportunities across the country, which JFK argues, are the hallmarks of progressive governance.

The APC’s record in social infrastructure is another area where JFK highlights its progressive impact. He emphasized the APC’s efforts in connecting Sierra Leone through first-class trunk roads and township roads in every district headquarters town. These developments reduced travel time and facilitated trade and communication, contributing to the nation’s economic growth. Notably, these projects were funded through internally generated revenue, avoiding a debt burden on future generations.

JFK also underscored the APC’s achievements in providing access to electricity, clean water, and healthcare services. The party’s policies, particularly in healthcare for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and under-five children, have been lauded as unmatched by any previous government. These initiatives have improved the quality of life for many Sierra Leoneans and demonstrated the APC’s commitment to social welfare.

Under APC’s leadership, Sierra Leone made significant strides in democracy and the rule of law. JFK highlighted that by the time the APC left office in 2018, the country was recognized as the 4th most peaceful in Africa and the most peaceful in West Africa. The APC’s commitment to legal aid, human rights, and democratic governance earned international acclaim, with commendations from the United Nations and former U.S. President Barack Obama, who noted that Sierra Leone was one of the few African countries where democracy had taken root.

JFK cautioned the Chief Minister against making statements that misrepresent the APC’s legacy. He urged a more thoughtful and responsible approach, emphasizing the importance of constructive criticism grounded in facts. By acknowledging the APC’s contributions, the current government can build on these achievements to further the nation’s progress.

In conclusion, JFK’s response serves as a reminder of the APC’s substantial role in shaping modern Sierra Leone. As political discourse continues, it is crucial to recognize and build upon past successes rather than dismissing them with unfounded rhetoric. This approach will foster unity and progress, essential for Sierra Leone’s future development.
