By: Abdul Razack Gbla

A tragic incident occurred in the afternoon hours of Sunday the 21st of July 2024, as the perimeter fence of the Siaka Stevens National Stadium, currently under rehabilitation by the Chinese GCCIC Construction Company, collapsed, resulting in the death of one individual. The collapse occurred near the Grey Bush area, opposite the cemetery, and has raised serious concerns about safety measures at the construction site.

The Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency had earlier issued a weather forecast warning of heavy rainfall. Between 9:00 AM and 12:00 noon today, 21st July 2024, a cumulative rainfall of 106mm was recorded, significantly increasing the risk of localized flooding in Freetown and other areas across the country. This downpour is believed to have contributed to the structural failure of the stadium’s perimeter fence.

In response to the adverse weather conditions and the potential for further incidents, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has been actively monitoring flood-prone areas. Community volunteers have been mobilized to report any incidents within their communities to ensure a swift response to emergencies.

The rehabilitation project at the Siaka Stevens National Stadium, a key sports facility in Sierra Leone, had been progressing under the supervision of the Chinese GCCIC Construction Company. The sudden collapse of the fence might cast a shadow over the project, with many raising concerns over the construction standards and safety protocols implemented by the company.

Eyewitnesses reported a loud crash as the fence gave way. Emergency services were reasonably quick to respond, but unfortunately, the individual did not make it alive. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

The public is requesting authorities to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause of the collapse and to hold accountable those responsible for any negligence. The NDMA has also advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and to report any signs of structural damage or flooding to the authorities immediately.

This incident is a clear manifestation of the importance of stringent safety measures, especially in areas prone to severe weather conditions. The NDMA and other relevant bodies are expected to review and enhance their protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
